How I got into Friesians
My daughter Catherine loves animals and got into horses by first having one on loan - then good old Dad helped her buy her own.  Linda, my wife, then went with Catherine to an Equine event and saw a Friesian and fell in love with the breed stating that if she ever had a horse this would be the breed.  I contacted FHAGBI and with the enthusiastic help of the Secretary decided to treat Linda to a weekend in Holland at the Stallion show for her Christmas present.  We both fell in love with the breed and despite being green as grass with horses we ended up buying Berend a 3 year old 3rd third premie gelding bred in Ameland, an island on the north coast of Friesland.

At this time the FHAGBI Board were looking for an accountant to help and because the Board members had helped us so much I volunteered not realising what this would lead to!!

My wife rode Berend without fear despite horse and rider being inexperienced and developed a loving partnership.  For my part I mucked out and paid the bills until I decided that I should do something about it so learnt how to drive with Karen Bassett as my tutor.  Berend and I were turned into the driving partnership who impressed some judges especially with the dressage and Berend became a trusting and loving ride and drive part of the family.

The breed has always left me in awe at their presence, character and friendliness and I have been proud to play my small part in promoting the breed albeit mainly from the support back office.

We were fortunate to make contact with FHAGBI and find out about Friesians properly and without bias, unfortunately there are many who are not so lucky.  My advice to anyone interested in the breed is take your time and do your homework well.  Its only fair to you and your Friesian.  Good luck, they are wonderful and truly magnificent horses to be involved with.
