DNA testing

There are certain instances where the KFPS require lineage verification to prove a horse's parentage, which is achieved by means of a DNA test on a sample of the horse's hair. Lineage verification is mandatory in the following situations;

  1. Mares who receive the Star predicate
  2. Mares whose foal is entered for registration
  3. If the date of stud service was not reported to the KFPS within 14 days. The costs of testing are at the stallion keeper´s expense.
  4. Foals born by insemination with frozen sperm but the stud service has not been reported. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  5. Foals or horses that are older than six months at the time of microchipping. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  6. When the foal is not at the dam´s side at the time of identification (microchipping). The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  7. Mares that have been covered/inseminated by two different stallions within one cycle or in two consecutive cycles. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  8. If there is any doubt as to the correctness of stud details of the stud service which has allegedly produced the foal in question. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  9. The date of the stud service reported to the KFPS does not correspond with the date of birth of the foal. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  10. Foal has been identified (micro-chipped) by a non-certified person. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  11. The application for registration in the foal register is more than four weeks after the date of microchipping. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  12. A defective or untraceable microchip transponder. If the transponder has been injected by the KFPS the costs for DNA testing will be at the expense of the KFPS, in all other cases the costs are at the registered owner´s expense.
  13. The microchip transponder number does not match with the expected number. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  14. Registration of foals born by via embryo transfer. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  15. Registration of foals in B-Book II. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.
  16. Stallions before taking part in the Central Examination. The costs of testing are at the registered owner´s expense.

If you need to provide a DNA sample for any of the above reasons, the hair sample MUST be collected by a certified passport consultant, a KFPS official or a veterinarian, unless otherwise specified by the KFPS. All hair samples sent to the KFPS for DNA testing must include a statement from the individual who has collected the hair sample which must contain their name, date and signature.

The KFPS also carries out random checks to verify lineage by means of DNA tests. Motives, procedures and execution will be carried out in line with the ‘protocol DNA’.

Please be aware that registrations requiring DNA testing often take in excess of 3 months, particularly B-Book registrations.
